Poll: Election winner won't impact economy much

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When it comes to the economy, half of Americans in a new poll say it won't matter much whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney wins ? even though the presidential candidates have staked their chances on which would be better at fixing the economic mess.

People are especially pessimistic about the future president's influence over jobs, according to the Associated Press-GfK poll. Asked how much impact the November winner will have on unemployment, 6 in 10 gave answers ranging from slim to none.

Yet the candidates, the polls and the pundits agree ? the economy is the issue of 2012. Can either man convince voters that he would set things right?

James Gray of Snow Hill, N.C., is skeptical.

"It doesn't look to me like the economy or nothing gets better no matter who you've got up there," Gray said. "I don't know why it is."

A retired policeman, Gray plans to vote for Romney and thinks the Republican might win. But he doesn't have much hope that would improve things for people like him, living on a fixed income. "Every time you go to the grocery store the prices have gone up," he said.

Years of disappointing economic news following the 2007-2009 recession have deflated American optimism. And worries about financial troubles in Europe and congressional gridlock at home hang over the future. Two-thirds of people still describe the economy as poor. The same number ? 31 percent ? think unemployment will grow worse over the next year as predict it will ease up.

"Right now it's so bad," said Maria Fisher of Timber Pines, Fla. "I wish everything was better."

Fisher, a preschool teacher at the YMCA, favors Romney because he's a Republican and a successful businessman. She's ready "to give him the chance to fix all these problems." But she doubts there's much the president can do.

Lots of Obama supporters feel the same way.

"The office of the president as a single person doesn't have as much influence as we generally attribute to them," said Jeff Guertin, a mechanical engineer in Bedford, N.H., who backs Obama.

Guertin said a president is limited by Congress' willingness to go along with his ideas, as well as all sorts of other factors, including world events, that affect whether the U.S. economy grows or shrinks.

Despite the dominance of economic issues in the presidential race, Americans are evenly split over whether the man living in the White House in 2013 will bring significant change to the overall economy.

A majority of those surveyed ? 55 percent ? say the winner will have from "just some impact" to "no impact" on the nation's huge budget deficits.

Those with little confidence that the winner can fix things are also more pessimistic overall ? just 32 percent of them think the economy will improve in the coming year. In contrast, among those who expect a substantial impact from the winner, almost half think the economy will get better.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to predict that the winner's imprint will be felt: 58 percent say the election's outcome will affect the economy overall. Yet fewer than half of Republicans foresee much impact on joblessness.

Everett Hickman, an Obama supporter, said both campaigns overplay how much a president can do.

"The federal government has some influence over the economy," said Hickman, a retired radio news reporter living in Charlotte, N.C. "It doesn't have the kind of push-pull, click-clack control that some people seem to think, or pretend to think."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.

Hamas official pledges fresh try at truce with Israel

A leader of the ruling Hamas said Saturday the militant group had agreed to try anew an Egypt-brokered ceasefire with Israel, after six days of bloodshed in and around the Gaza Strip.

Hamas and "the Palestinian resistance factions will respect the truce as long as the [forces] of the occupation do the same and that's what we told our Egyptian brothers who demanded that we cease fire," Ayman Taha told AFP.

"The Egyptians have demanded that the [forces] of the occupation stop their aggression and have informed us that they are prepared to do so," he added.

"We told them that we shall respond to calm with calm; if the occupier stops [its attacks] there will be no further retaliation by the resistance factions."

An official close to the group said the truce would take effect from midnight (2100 GMT).

Earlier in the day Hamas threatened to call off a previous truce attempt announced on Wednesday which was unraveling, with Palestinian officials reporting three Palestinians killed and dozens wounded in seven Israeli air strikes Saturday.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that by Saturday evening 24 rockets had slammed into southern Israel from Gaza, with another five brought down by its Iron Dome air defense system.

More were said to have fallen at sea or inside the Gaza Strip itself.

A man in the town of Sderot was injured in one attack during the morning, Israeli police said.

The current round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air strikes Monday morning, just hours after gunmen from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Israel has said its sudden spike in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the Sinai border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting militants poised to attack the Jewish state.

Since Monday Palestinians have reported 15 dead in Gaza strikes, with dozens wounded. At least 150 rockets and mortar shells have hit Israel, wounding five people, among them four border police officers.

CD reviews for Eric Church

Chief CD review - Chief Eric Church is a mainstream country artist being marketed as a modern outlaw. His music does owe more to Southern rock bands like Lynyrd Skynrd than pop, but it is still radio friendly country music. However, this shouldn't be held against him. His first two albums had a number of great songs, and "Chief" builds on that success, while adding a heavy dose of experimentation. At times, he stretches his trademark sound by bringing in obvious outside influences.????
Carolina CD review - Carolina After stepping on to the scene nearly three years ago with hits like How Bout You, and Guys Like Me, , Eric Church returns with a sophomore album that tries hard to mine the same sounds. He combines that rough around the edges, good ol' boy attitude on some songs with a more sensitive, straight-forward approach on others. And the good thing is that he's equally impressive with both on most of the 12 songs. Church starts with a couple of outlaw-esque rockers, the rollicking Ain't????
Sinners Like Me CD review - Sinners Like Me The cover of newbie Eric Church's debut shows him looking disconsolate grasping a glass of whiskey with a big bottle of booze nearby. But don't think this is tears in your beer, hard core honky tonk music. That's clear from the soaring rock guitar lines of "Before She Does" where Church hits easy targets with cries lauding "Mama's apple pie" and claiming "the tax man and the devil share the same address." "Lightning," a first-person song????
Editorial: Walking the talk?? When names like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon and the Hag are invoked, you're talking hard core country. These are the touchstones of country , the guys who made country music what it was and still is (or maybe can be). When these folks would sing about being down-and-out and the rough-and-tumble, they knew of what they were singing about. Fast forward a few years to the country singers of today.???? Concert Review: The adventure of Bonnaroo?? Day One This was our first trip to Bonnaroo. And like most newbies to Bonnaroo, we found the experience initially overwhelming - what with the vast array of acts and entertainment. We also discovered that it's remarkably well run and expertly organized. The people are friendly - the epitome of Tennessee hospitality - and fellow festival goers...???? Concert Review: Brad Paisley deserves new title?? It might be a heavy honor to bestow on someone, but the late Chet Atkins doubtlessly would have pronounced Brad Paisley a Certified Guitar Hero (CGP) as Atkins was called. Paisley also might be considered one of the best country performers out there, and one of the ultra few (besides George Strait first and foremost and Alan Jackson) who hew to a...????

Trampled by Turtles reach for stars and satellites Trampled by Turtles is one of the best bluegrass bands around, sort of. They hesitate to ascribe any particular label to their unique sound. When asked to clarify, front man Dave Simonett said, "I don't really know what to say when I'm asked that. I hesitate to say bluegrass because I'm familiar with that kind of music. I feel that is a genre that has set boundaries that, and anytime you stray out of that, you're not really considered a bluegrass band no matter what instruments you're playing on. I would say it's Americana with string instruments, but whatever anyone wants to call it, that's fine."...???? Carolina Chocolate Drops leave Eden With its latest full-length, "Leaving Eden," the uniquely modern, old-timey jug and/or string band Carolina Chocolate Drops was faced with the daunting task of following up a highly successful major label debut album. After all, "Genuine Negro Jig" earned the act a Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy. All pressure aside, though, these new tracks are just as unusually enjoyable as those found on the group's debut....???? Martina McBride rolls on Martina McBride was introduced at a CMT awards presentation as "one of the greatest voices ever created by God." While debatable that her voice may be the result of divine creation, her high octane soprano is one of the most beautiful and powerful in music. Her latest studio release, "Eleven" ("Hits And More" came out in January as a greatest hits plus package) is her most personal to date....????

A review of the warning signs of colon cancer ? Real Bizzy

Colon cancer begins within the large intestinal tract, and that is the colon. This cancer might in addition occur in the rectum at the end of the colon, and it will be known as rectal cancer. The two cancers may be referred to as colorectal cancer. Colon cancers generally begin as noncancerous polyps that grow into cancer. Many people with colon cancer do not have signs and symptoms or develop them in the later stages in the illness. How rare/common is it for foster parents to allow their foster kids to ...

after they age out?

Have you heard of any that help pay for college; walk a former foster daughter down the aisle; put them in their will.

I am just curious if this ever happens.

Best answer:

Answer by Randy B
One of the ladies who instructed on my intro course as a foster parent had about a half dozen children over the years that maxed out in while in her care. All but one of them remained a defacto part of the family to the point where she and her husband walked two of them down the isle when they eventually got married. The one that did not remain a close part of their family had other mental and medical issues and went to a long term adult care facility. Although he doesn?t recognize them any more, they still visit him and treat him as if he was the part of their family he would want to be if he was able to.

I?m not sure how rare it is but I would suspect that it does happen.

50-gigapixel camera is straight out of science fiction

29 min.

While photographers marvel at the 20 or 30 megapixels captured by the latest cameras, researchers at Duke laugh quietly and return to their lab to continue work on a system that could capture 50 gigapixels at the touch of a button.

For comparison, if your average point-and-shoot picture was the size of a word on this page, a 50-gigapixel shot would be around the size of your entire screen.

Gigapixels aren't new in and of themselves, of course: Enormous photos of the Milky Way or Obama's?inauguration are both effective demonstrations of the power of huge images. But generally these giant pictures are created by one camera that takes hundreds (or thousands) of shots, which are then?fitted together after the fact. Not a problem if you're taking pictures of stars, but no good?if you wanted to capture a flock of birds taking off.

The team at Duke, led by David Brady at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, decided to take things a different direction: instead of taking lots of pictures in sequence with one camera, why not take lots of pictures at once with a bunch of cameras?

The result is the AWARE-2 camera system, a machine that looks like something out of science fiction. It bristles with wires and ports, and houses?a lens array that could be the eye of an enormous robotic insect.

The system actually shares many characteristics with insects' compound eyes: A single image enters through a central lens, but is then refracted outward in 98 different directions to 98 different image sensors, each of which receives a different piece of the picture. The pieces are then assembled by a central processor.

Images produced by the system are enormous. 50 gigapixels is the maximum theoretical size, but even a fraction of that?that is far larger than any picture most people have ever taken. Look at the shot below; on this enormous landscape, the tiny white dots on the sky are in fact birds, captured in enough detail that you can zoom in and check out the details of their wings. (here's a larger version)

That's with a prototype device using only half the microcameras and the first generation of lenses designed for the system.?Brady explains that right now, the size and quality of images is limited by the quality of the main objective lens, but they have already built a superior lens for 10-gigapixel images.

50 gigapixels is the upper limit because it is the precision?limit of lens-manufacturing technology, and also because beyond that you start running into the resolution limit of the atmosphere, i.e. what can be discerned through all those pesky air molecules between the camera and the subject. So it's no surprise that they're considering imaging at that size for astronomical rather than terrestrial photography.

The applications of enormous images captured more or less instantly are easy to imagine, both in everyday life, academic research, and for the military, which is funding the project through DARPA.

The paper describing AWARE-2 was published in the journal Nature, and the authors have put together a separate?site with more information and lots of?pictures for the curious.

Heyward hits 2 HRs as Braves outslug Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Heyward and the Atlanta Braves never intended to challenge the powerful New York Yankees to a game of home run derby in the Bronx. Still, they came out ahead.

Heyward hit two of a record nine homers at the new Yankee Stadium and the Braves outslugged the Yankees for a 10-5 victory in the sweltering heat Wednesday.

"We survived," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

Freddie Freeman, Martin Prado, Heyward and David Ross all connected off Phil Hughes (7-6) to build a 6-1 lead on a sticky, 94-degree afternoon. Michael Bourn stole what might've been another home run from Jayson Nix after missing an earlier opportunity for a try at a leaping grab.

Alex Rodriguez hit his 640th career homer, and Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter and Eric Chavez all hit long balls against Tommy Hanson (8-4).

"It's just that kind of ballpark," Heyward said, "but at the same time we got two teams that are capable of hitting some home runs."

The Yankees, who have a major league-leading 105 homers, managed just four other hits in their second straight loss after a 10-game winning streak. They pulled to 6-5 on Curtis Granderson's RBI single in the seventh but Rodriguez ended the inning with a double-play grounder.

"It's been up and down, like a lot of our other hitters," manager Joe Girardi said of Rodriguez's season.

In the eighth, Freeman hit an RBI single and Heyward a two-run shot off Boone Logan to help Atlanta pull away for its third win in 10 games and second straight against New York. The Yankees swept the Braves in Atlanta last week.

Heyward had the go-ahead hit Tuesday night and added a triple.

"We're really, really good when Jason's swinging the bat well."

Even though he didn't start in a day game after playing Tuesday night, Chipper Jones still was a factor early. In the final year of a Hall of Fame-worthy career, Jones was honored before his last regular-season game against the Yankees. On behalf of the Yankees, Jeter and former Braves teammate Andruw Jones gave Chipper third base from Tuesday's game. In 19 years with Atlanta, Chipper Jones faced the Yankees in two World Series.

With the sun beating down on the crowd of 45,094, the public address announcer urged fans visit the cooling stations set up in the concourses.

Girardi emphasized how important it was to be aggressive early on a day that felt as if it were over 100 degrees with the oppressive humidity. The Braves were.

Bourn singled leading off and, with two outs, stole second without a throw. He scored on Dan Uggla's single to left. Freeman wasted no time, connecting on the first pitch he saw for a two-run drive into the New York bullpen in right-center to make it 3-0.

Jeter got one back with his fourth leadoff homer of the season, hitting Hanson's first pitch into the stands in right-center.

"When Jeter caught that one in the first, I was like `here we go,"' Ross said.

Hanson only gave up one hit after Jeter's homer until Chavez led off the fifth with a drive to straightaway center field. Bourn watched the homer clear the fence and land in the netting over Monument Park then jumped and smacked his hand to glove.

Bourn made the play he wanted after a walk to Russell Martin, ranging far to his right to snare Nix's fly above the wall to protect a 6-2 lead.

Heyward stood at the fence in right field and watched Rodriguez's high fly leading off the sixth carry into the stands. The RBI was A-Rod's 1,925th, breaking a tie with Jimmie Foxx for sole possession of sixth on the career list.

Cano followed with a smash deep into the stands in right-center to end Hanson's day for the Yankees' third back-to-back homers of the season - one was three in a row.

Hanson matched a career high with the four homers allowed. He came in 6-0 with a 1.22 ERA against AL East teams, but gave up four runs in five-plus innings this time.

All season Hughes has been hurt by the homer, giving up at least one in each of his first 12 starts before keeping the ball in the park in his previous outing. The career-most four allowed Wednesday boosted his total to a majors-leading 19 this year.

"He just didn't have great location today," Girardi said.

NOTES: Teams have combined to hit eight homers at the ballpark that opened in 2009 three times. ... Mark Teixeira was out of the Yankees lineup Wednesday. He was hit on the left foot by Heyward's hard grounder Tuesday night and Girardi said the first baseman was still sore. He doubled as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. ... Former Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams was chosen as manager of the World Team in the All-Star weekend Futures Game for minor leaguers on Sunday, July 8 in Kansas City. ... The 94 degrees at game time was not the hottest start for Atlanta. It was 97 degrees in Arizona when they faced the Diamondbacks on April 21 with the roof open. ... The Yankees are the last team to allow 10 runs in a game. ... Heyward has three multihomer games.

'Taken 2' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Liam Neeson is back as international badass Bryan Mills in a brand-new trailer for the hotly-awaited 'Taken' sequel.
By Josh Wigler

Liam Neeson in "Taken 2"
Photo:

Liam Neeson has a very particular set of skills. Skills that make him a nightmare for people like you — unless you're a fan of ex-CIA operatives who remain unreasonably badass in their golden years. In that case, Neeson is something of a dream come true.

The Oscar nominee remains in perfectly hardcore form in the first official trailer for "Taken 2," the sequel to the 2008 action flick that kick-started a surprising new phase in Neeson's career. Since his turn as former spy Bryan Mills in the Luc Besson-produced thriller, Neeson has become the go-to guy for older-man-kicks-so-much-ass action movies like "The A-Team," "Unknown" and "The Grey." But it's "Taken" that remains the decisive favorite for Neeson fans, and seeing him run around in that particular world once again is the action-movie equivalent of comfort food: a bit familiar, yes, but gloriously so.

Here are five key scenes from the "Taken 2" trailer.

A Job for Boris the Blade
When you need a vaguely Eastern European bad guy to add gravitas to your film, call Rade Serbedzija. With bad-guy credits including "Snatch," "24," "X-Men: First Class" and more, he's the man for the job. In "Taken 2," he'll be the one giving Mills hell, concocting an elaborate scheme to get revenge for his son, who was killed by Mills in the first "Taken" film. "He slaughtered our men," he scowls in the trailer. "Our brothers. Our sons. We will find him. And we will have our revenge."

Family Reunion
Our villain's vengeance will take him and his men to Istanbul, where Bryan's ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) and daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) pay him a surprise visit. Bad timing, considering the spit-storm headed Mills' way. But there's a silver lining: Bryan's relationship with his daughter seems much smoother than ever before, and it even looks like he might have another shot at love with Lenore ... assuming they survive their next ordeal.

Phoning It In
The "Taken 2" trailer is fantastically familiar, even if the tables are somewhat reversed this time: It's not Kim being taken, but Lenore and Mills himself. When he gets on the phone to once again instruct Kim on what to do next, his directions are different, but the tone remains the same. With Mills and Lenore at the mercy of terrorists, it's going to be a whole new ball game in "Taken 2," their lives depending heavily on help from ...

Saving Grace
Traditionally the character who mucks everything up for her surrounding cast (see "Lockout," "Breaking Dawn," "Lost" and so many more), Maggie Grace will finally get her opportunity to shine as a bona fide badass in "Taken 2." She's seen in the trailer jumping from rooftops and facing down guns with (almost) no tears, a marked improvement from the Kim of the last "Taken." But as she told MTV News just a few weeks ago, Kim is "empowered ... [but] she doesn't morph into La Femme Nikita." So temper your expectations just a little bit.

"You'll Just Have To Die"
Frankly, Kim doesn't really need to step up her game. Even if he's captured early on in the film, Neeson's ex-spook won't be sitting on the sidelines throughout the proceedings, as the trailer clearly illustrates. He spends the final few seconds of the trailer breaking necks, shooting thugs and making explicit death threats over cell phones, as he's wont to do. Old dog, same tricks — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Tell us what you think of the new "Taken 2" trailer in the comments section below!

New gravitational biology lab allows for testing in artificial gravity

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? NASA is expanding its existing capabilities for doing plant and animal tissue investigations on the International Space Station with the delivery of a new centrifuge scheduled for this summer. The centrifuge is a NASA and commercial industry collaboration, and will be housed in the NanoRacks facility.

The small Gravitational Biology Lab will allow biological experimentation in artificial gravity -- from zero gravity to twice Earth's normal gravity -- for prolonged periods of time. The new facility will provide environmental control, lighting, data transfer, commanding, and observation of experiments in Mars and moon gravity conditions, as well as mimicking Earth's gravity. This is useful for biological research, and could lead to advances in medications and vaccines, agricultural controls, and discoveries in genetics -- all beneficial to those of us on Earth.

NanoRacks hardware is available for many different investigation scenarios, including mini-aquariums, seed germination boxes, plant growth chambers, mammal and plant cell culture units, along with multi-generation chambers for fruit flies. There have been several multi-generational investigations involving drosophila -- a type of fruit fly. Drosophila has a similar genetic makeup to humans, and can serve as a genetic model for several human disease studies.

There are already two NanoRacks research platforms in use on the space station, including two microscopes. More than 35 investigations have already used the NanoRacks facilities, which operate under a Space Act Agreement with NASA and the U.S. National Lab. In 2005, Congress designated the space station a national laboratory in an effort to include other government organizations, schools and universities and private companies in the use of the orbiting lab facility, increasing the amount of research being done in microgravity.

The centrifuge is a joint venture between Astrium Space Transportation and NanoRacks LLC, with more joint projects planned. Additional facilities also are planned, with a Plate Reader scheduled for delivery this year to allow on-site microbiological analysis, expanding life science and biological research.

"This is an important step in the expansion of National Lab facilities aboard the space station," said Marybeth Edeen, former U.S. National Lab manager at NASA's Johnson Space Center. "Having companies develop research and facilities for the National Lab with their own funding demonstrates the beginnings of the commercial space marketplace that the National Lab was created to serve."

Centrifuges have been used in space since 1985 to conduct more than 130 experiments on 25 shuttle missions, resulting in the publication of more than 300 scientific papers. This heritage provides a large variety of flight-proven experiment designs now available for use by researchers for all types of molecular and cellular investigations on animal and plant tissues. The new NanoRacks facility design will provide fully automated culturing of cells and tissue, including "plug-and-play" payloads that require only a standard computer USB connection to access needed power and environmental controls.

Station crew members and researchers are looking forward to the addition of this new centrifuge. What they will learn from the research in the new facility can be used to better life on Earth, as well as provide knowledge to help advance future long-duration human spaceflight missions.

How shingle roofing To Make Changes To Improve Your Home ...

How shingle roofing To Make Changes To Improve Your Home

With your home being the single most expensive thing any of us will probably ever purchase, making changes, improvements or renovations to it can be a scary proposal. What if it goes wrong? What if we make the wrong choices? This article will help you wade through the rights and wrongs with some great tips and ideas for your home improvement projects.

To avoid stressful emergency situations, make sure everyone in the house knows where important controls like the circuit board or water shut-off valve are. This way, no matter who is home when the unexpected happens, you can limit the damage done and also limit panic in younger members of the household.

In home improvements the kitchen usually makes up the foundation of the home. Putting in new wooden cabinets along with shiny new faucets and a marble countertop, can immediately add brightness to a room and make it such a much more enjoyable space. This will also make the house more desirable to others if you decide to sell.

When you have made the decision to re stain your deck surface there are many different kinds of stains on the market. Some of the options are clear stains, semi-transparent ones, oil-based stains, solid color stains, and toners. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages, do your research and find the right one for you.

If you have hardwood floors, you may notice that overtime they get scratched. Fixing these scratches is not that hard to do. You will need to sand the floor, and stain or seal it. Getting out these scratches will make your floors look like new again, and will give your home that new floor look.

If you are low on cash, but need to remodel your kitchen cabinetry, a great way to save money is by ditching cabinets altogether. Set up some nice shelving on the wall with canisters to store your items and use baskets to store larger groceries you may need. This creates a really neat shabby chic look that looks great in old colonial homes.

Windows roof shingles and doors make a perfect home improvement project. You can add an indoor window box or change out your old patio doors for French doors. It is often possible to find good deals on these types of materials at the home improvement store. You won?t have to spend a lot of money to make a dramatic change.

If you are stuck with a boring steel front door, and can?t afford a new one, try painting it an interesting color, or choose a paint with special effects. You could also apply some kind of faux-finish to make it appear more interesting and expensive!

Ask to see your contractor?s insurance certificate to ensure he is insured, then call his insurance company to find out what he?s actually covered for. There are minimums set out by law which his coverage will need to adhere to, so find out what they are in your state and make sure he meets them.

When doing home improvement work, one of the most important tools to have is a drill. It allows you to make different sized holes in surfaces for screws, and allows you to drive the screws in with special attachments. It?s best to have a cordless battery powered drill with at least 9 volts and 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 inch drill bits, and attachments for driving flat-head and Phillips screws.

If you have tiles in your bathroom, make sure to use bath rugs in front of your toilet and bathtub. Adding bath rugs not only adds a touch of personality to your bathroom, but also keeps you from slipping and falling; try rugs with different patterns and designs for a look that is uniquely your own.

When you are doing a home improvement project, it is important not to rush through the demolition. It is tempting just to rip the old work out quickly so that you can get right into installing the new pieces. However, you do not want to inadvertently rip wires out of the wall because you did not take the time to realize there was an electrical component still attached.

Maintain your septic tank regularly. You can easily buy certain chemicals that accelerate high quality roof shingles decomposition and avoid overflowing. When you plan home improvement make sure you do not tamper accidentally with your septic tank. If you need to get a detailed plan of your house and be extremely carefully to avoid costly damages.

Replacing an old, worn doorknob is a great way to update the appearance of your home, and the safety level as well. This project won?t require more than an hour of your time. The most complicated tool you will have to use is a screwdriver. Replacement knobs can be found at your local hardware store.

For someone working on a limited budget, there are ways to give your living space a brand new look. It?s simply a case of working with what you have. Move your existing furniture around, maybe using different pieces in different rooms. Replace any photos with updated ones. Spend a little money on a new shade for an existing lamp. It?s the small touches that make the difference.

Asphalt Shingles

The shingles on your roof will at some point need to be replaced. As asphalt shingles get older, they start to lose the bound granules and curl up on the corners of the sheets. If you are experiencing leaks that have gone through the ceiling, then it is definitely time to lay down a new roof. Otherwise, if your roof has lost several shingles, this is a less drastic but firm indication that it?s time to replace the roof.

Roof Shingles

Is it time to put on a new roof? Shingles are always the standard, but what about a nice weather-proof tin roof? Tin roofs have improved by leaps and bounds in today?s world, almost becoming preferred. Tin roofs are relaxing during rainy weather, and they are highly durable. Think about installing a tin roof when it is time to replace your existing roof.

Hopefully the information that you have just read will help you realize that home improvement isn?t as scary as it can seem. There are wrong choices that can be made, but if you stick to these tips, you will have the information you need to make good choices and have a great and valuable home.

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting brings a wealth of scientific minds to the shores of Germany?s Lake Constance. Every summer at Lindau, dozens of Nobel Prize winners exchange ideas with hundreds of young researchers from around the world. Whereas the Nobelists are the marquee names, the younger contingent is an accomplished group in its own right. In advance of this year?s meeting, which focuses on physics, we are profiling several promising attendees under the age of 30. The profile below is the 14th in a series of 30.

Name: Ioannis Florakis
Age: 29
Born: Athens, Greece
Nationality: Greek

Current position: Postdoctoral researcher, Max Planck Institute for Physics and Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich, Germany
Education: Bachelor?s degree from the University of Athens, master's and doctoral degrees from Ecole Normale Sup?rieure (University of Paris)

What is your field of research?
My research focuses in the field of theoretical high-energy physics and, in particular, superstring theory.

What drew you to physics, and to that research area in particular?
I would say that, since a very young age, I had an inherently curious spirit. It was precisely this intrinsic desire to understand ?how things work? that drew my attention to physics and mathematics. In particular, I can remember spending my final years before high school graduation struggling to read books on higher mathematics, so that I would apply this knowledge to physical problems. The pleasure gained from the satisfaction of ?finding things out? was what made me realize this is the road I would pursue in life. I should also add that a very important element that helped trigger my passion for theoretical physics was my constant impression that high school textbooks were often filled with oversimplifying arguments that I rarely considered satisfactory. My specific choice of research domain (theoretical physics and, in particular, string theory) was largely motivated by the conviction that, despite their apparent complexity, physical phenomena can actually be described in terms of a small set of fundamental principles (i.e. symmetries), which can in turn be re-cast into precise mathematical form.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
It is hard to make predictions about the future, though I certainly aspire to continue contributing to the scientific community. One of the problems that I consider fundamentally important is the study of thermodynamics in the extreme high temperature regime, within the framework of an ultraviolet-complete theory that contains gravity, such as string theory. It appears that various theoretical problems arise in such regimes, where the energy (or curvature) approaches the Planck (or string) scale, the scale where the effects of quantum gravity are expected to dominate. There is also evidence that the correct understanding of string theory in the high-temperature (or high-curvature) regime may provide answers to some of the long-standing problems of cosmology and, in particular, the initial singularity problem. It seems that part of the difficulty of analyzing string thermodynamics in such setups is due to the absence of mathematical techniques adapted for such calculations. My current research essentially aims to develop techniques that will hopefully help treat this long-standing problem.

Who are your scientific heroes?
There are several scientists whose work and, sometimes, whose approach to science and life in general I deeply admire. I could mention, for example, Werner Heisenberg, Paul Dirac, Richard Feynman and Eugene Wigner.

What activities outside of physics do you most enjoy?
One of my favorite musical instruments is the piano, which I have played since an early age. I also have a special interest in listening to classic music records and films.

What do you hope to gain from this year?s Lindau meeting?
Attending the Lindau Nobel meetings is a unique opportunity for any young scientist to meet and discuss with some of the pioneers of the field and profit from their deep physical insight. Personally, I believe that events such as the Lindau meeting help provide a source of considerable inspiration for a young scientist?s work. In this sense, the Lindau experience is unique, in that it permits an interaction of young researchers with the fathers of the field. I am certain that the discussions will influence my own views and ideas in a way beneficial to my research. In addition, it will also provide an excellent opportunity for me to meet and interact with other young researchers.

Are there any Nobelists whom you are particularly excited to meet or learn from at Lindau?
David Gross and Martinus Veltman are two of the Nobelists that will be present in Lindau this year and whom I am particularly looking forward to meeting. Their deep and important contributions to perturbative and non-perturbative quantum field theory and theoretical physics, in general, are well-known and now constitute standard textbook material. It will be a rare occasion for me to meet them in person.
