Red Cross halts most Pakistan aid after beheading

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said late Tuesday it was halting most aid programs in Pakistan due to fears over deteriorating security ? a concern underscored early Wednesday when 19 soldiers and militants were killed in a clash at a military checkpoint.

The independent global aid agency, which rarely suspends its operations even in war zones, has worked in the country since the end of British colonial rule in 1947 - but was shaken by the discovery in April of the?beheaded body of British doctor Khalil Rasjed Dale, one of its health workers.

It said it would carry on working in the country "but on a reduced scale," having already suspended operations in three of Pakistan's four provinces in May pending a security assessment.

As attacks increase, aid workers say they must keep safety in mind at all times.?? NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

Paul Castella, head of the ICRC delegation in Islamabad, said in a statement: "We are ready to continue helping people in need, such as the wounded and the physically disabled, provided working conditions for our staff are adequate. In the coming weeks, we will coordinate with the Pakistani authorities the resumption of health services as conditions permit, in particular the re-opening of our surgical hospital in Peshawar, which closed down after the murder of our colleague."

Aid workers become targets as Pakistan faces new humanitarian crisis

The statement said the ICRC's partnership with the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and support for physical rehabilitation services, notably in Peshawar and Muzaffarabad, will continue, as will the assistance provided by the ICRC for families seeking to restore and maintain contact with Pakistanis detained abroad.

The killing of an ICRC official in Quetta had seriously worried staff members of the organization about their security in Pakistan, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Dale, who converted to Islam, ran a health program in Quetta when he was kidnapped on January 5 while going home from work.

The Pakistan Taliban have been fighting a bloody insurgency against the Pakistani state since the group was formed 2007, Reuters reported. It is close to al-Qaida and it claimed credit for a failed car bomb attempt in New York's Times Square in May 2010.?

Meanwhile at least 19 people - nine Pakistan Army soldiers and 10 militants ? were killed and 16 others injured in clashes between the Pakistani security forces and militants at the remote mountainous Ghatsar area of Tiarza, South Waziristan, on Wednesday.

Calif lawmakers denounce anti-Semitism in colleges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? An Assembly resolution urging California colleges and universities to squelch nascent anti-Semitism also encouraged educators to crack down on demonstrations against Israel, angering advocates for Muslim students.

With no debate, lawmakers on Tuesday approved a resolution that encourages university leaders to combat a wide array of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel actions.

"California schools need to recognize that anti-Semitism is still a very real issue on college campuses around the state ? it did not disappear with the end of World War II," said Assemblywoman Linda Halderman, R-Fresno, the resolution's author.

Most of the incidents of anti-Semitism the resolution cited are related to the Israel-Palestine debate. These include instances of protesters comparing Israeli police to Nazis and urging support for Hamas.

The resolution, which is purely symbolic and does not carry policy implications, also condemns the suggestion that Israel is a "racist" state and that Jews "wield excessive power over American foreign policy." The resolution characterizes the student campaign to pressure the University of California system to divest from Israel as anti-Semitic, and applauds university leaders' refusal to consider it.

The Council on American Islamic Relations said the resolution went too far and constituted an attack on students' right to free expression.

"To be clear, genuine acts of anti-Semitism should be condemned, but this resolution goes far beyond that," said Rachel Roberts, a spokeswoman for the group. "By characterizing pro-Palestinian speech as anti-Jewish, the Legislature sidelines those Muslim students and progressive Jewish students who often organize together to raise awareness about the Middle East."

Roberts said the council was disappointed that the resolution was drafted and passed while California colleges were out of session.

Pro-Palestinian protests have become a regular occurrence on many University of California campuses. Students sometimes use sensational tactics including simulating checkpoints and combining swastikas with the Star of David.

In 2010, 10 Muslim students were convicted of misdemeanors for repeatedly interrupting a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren at UC Irvine, where students were suspected of painting swastikas in university buildings.

The Assembly's actions also drew criticism from free speech advocates. Carlos Villarreal, director of the San Francisco chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, called the resolution irresponsible and dangerous because it combines legitimate condemnations of acts of intimidation and hate with specific objections to tactics used to support the Palestinian people.

"In doing so, it can be seen as having no other purpose than to demonize all those who criticize the nation-state of Israel or support the rights of the Palestinian people," he said.

Halderman did not mention Israel when she introduced HR35, which passed on a voice vote with 66 of the Assembly's 80 members signing on as co-authors.

Some of the lawmakers who signed on as co-authors when the resolution was called on the floor seemed surprised to later learn of the references to Israel. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, was one of the few who did not support it.

"Ignorance reigns up here," he said.

One of the resolution's co-authors, Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, said she understood critics' concerns.

"We absolutely have to have colleges and universities that are free from anti-Semitism," Lowenthal said. "But we just have to be careful that we don't accidentally silence legitimate debate as we try to shut down organized hate."

The California Legislature has no Muslim members, according to the council.

Family Home and Life: Seed Packet Template

With fall just around the corner ( yes it's wishful thinking!)? it will soon be time to start saving seeds from you garden. So I thought I would be real smart and make a seed template for you to print out. I?ve not made printables before and I searched high and low for a tutorial to learn how it's done. It took some work let me tell you. ?(to figure it out, for me at least) Here is the link to the one tutorial?that finally helped me in case you need one.

Seed Round Up (Graphics Fairy)

What I really want to do is learn how to create something as simple as a seed template on the computer. I had grandiose ideas of pretty vintage graphics decorating?mine but that was more than I could accomplish.??

I made this one (below) the old school way, drawing, tracing and cutting then scanning it into the computer. I scanned it as a photo then took it to Pixlr to add the text. It doesn?t look as slick as the other seed packet templates out there online. Is there anyone who can send me in the right direction to learn how to make one on my computer?
I made two printable seed packet templates for you to use if you like. One has a large seed packet on one page and the other has a small seed packet on one page for you to choose from. I tried to have two small packets on one page but for some reason Google would upload it as two pages with one packet on each. In Word I had two packets on one page. I have no idea what went wrong.

Here it is; they can be printed on regular printer paper or onto card stock for a sturdier packet. Pretty scrap book paper could also be used.

It would be a fun project for the kids to decorate your seed packet template before you cut it out. Let them color it with crayons, markers, or stamps if you like. I vote for small garden themed stamps J

Cut out your template and fold where you see the dotted lines in the picture. Your print out will not have the dotted lines. For a nice clean fold, use a ruler or other straight edge to fold the template over on. Glue back flaps and bottom flap down. Top can be taped or glued. If one day I learn to make a better and prettier seed packet template I'll replace this one for?you all.?And now that I have learned how to make a downloadable printable document, I can start giving you patterns on occasion?for the things I make. Like?for the?felt cupcakes I made a while back. I hope you enjoy my silly little seed packets.

MANILA ? The remains of the late Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo have been transferred from Naga City Hall to Basilica Minore de Nuestra Se?ora de Pe?afrancia in the city. Robredo was known as a devotee of Our Lady of Pe?afrancia, the patroness of Bicol province.
The DILG secretary?s remains arrived at the Basilica Minore around 10 a.m. Monday.
State funeral honors were again rendered to Robredo while his remains were being transferred.
Four honorary pallbearers designated by his family escorted his remains.
Departure and arrival honors were also accorded by the Philippine National Police.
There will be public viewing and vigil at the Basilica Minore until 5 p.m. Monday.
It will be followed by a mass to be officiated by Nueca Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Zamora Legaspi.

Strangers to the Rescue - Parents - Families.com

There's a fine line between charity and prudence. It's a lesson I've learned the hard way since becoming a parent.

I was reminded just how challenging it can be to reconcile the two after hearing the story of the family whose summer vacation included a record breaking delay at Salt Lake City International Airport.

Earlier this month, the local ABC affiliate in Salt Lake City broadcast the plight of Curtis Saxton, his wife, and his two children, ages 13 and 4, who became stranded at the airport for nearly a week.

The clan was trying to get home to Virginia using JetBlue buddy passes. They scored the tickets at a huge discount and knew the restrictions associated with them.

For starters, buddy passes only allow holders to fly if there is room after all full paying passengers and standby passengers have boarded the plane. What's more, during the busy summer travel season it's rare that a family of four can find seats together on a flight using the cheap tickets.

The Saxtons didn't anticipate being stuck in Salt Lake City for more than a day or so. However, one day turned into two, and then three, four and five. For nearly a week the family hung out at the airport hoping to get on a flight using their buddy passes.

According to news reports, the Saxtons slept on the airport's metal benches and didn't shower for days. In addition, the family says it was short on money, so it survived on one meal a day for the entire time it was stranded at the airport. This led to 4-year-old Dominic getting sick. The lack of food apparently took its toll on the boy's body and he began throwing up in the JetBlue terminal. This led to a visit by a team of paramedics... and then the local media.

Once the news crew got involved and broadcast Saxton's story to the world, charitable strangers stepped in to help out. Within hours of the station airing the family's travel tale gone horribly wrong, an ABC 4 viewer purchased tickets for all of the Saxtons to get home to Virginia. In addition, a slew of other viewers offered free lodging, food, and medical assistance, including United Airlines, which paid for a motel for the clan to stay in until their departure from Salt Lake City.

For the record, a Salt Lake International Airport official told ABC 4 that Saxton refused lodging and food assistance during the family's ordeal because he did not want to leave the airport for fear of losing a chance at standby seats.

While my heart goes out to this family, I can't help but think of all the other clans who use buddy passes to travel. Most, if not all of them, are fully cognizant of the risks involved in using the uber-cheap tickets. The passes don't guarantee seats, so you have to have a Plan B, C, and D ready to roll, if you are determined to fly for practically nothing.

Thanks to charitable strangers, the Saxtons were able to get help for their ailing child, who probably wouldn't have been puking, if they had devised a better contingency plan. That's where prudence comes in. As a parent, you have to step it up a few notches and anticipate how your children will handle a given situation rather than just how you'd react.

Charity wants what is good above all things. Prudence finds the appropriate means to attain these goods. A wise parent knows how to reconcile the two.

Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System

As Bluetooth wireless audio streaming continues to increase its presence in portable speaker docks and headphones, it's now finding its way into less likely areas, such as speaker systems intended for computers. The Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System, at $129.99 (direct) , is reasonably priced for a quality 2.1 PC speaker system?add in the Bluetooth streaming capabilities and it's a potential steal. However, while its overall sonic performance is balanced, with a subtle bass presence, a rattling subwoofer frame and some other odd design choices make that price seem more in line with its overall capabilities.

Design
The sleek 2.1 Prisma speaker system comes in white, silver, or, like our model, black, with the two matte plastic satellite speaker frames measuring 9.2 by 1.8 by 4.7 inches. On the front panels, cloth speaker grilles hide a 2.75-inch mid-range driver and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter on each speaker. The 30-watt subwoofer features a 5-inch, downward-firing driver. It features the same matte black plastic and vaguely-triangular theme, measuring 7.83 by 9.76 by 11.57 inches, with an under-lit Power button that mimics the status lighting of the under-lit Volume knob on the wired remote.

The sub is the heart of the system with the wired controller, the two satellite speakers, the power supply, and an optional wired 3.5mm input all connected to its rear panel. Unfortunately, all these cables can be a bit cumbersome, and some, like the cable that connects to both satellites, seem a bit short if you wish to keep the sub on the floor and out of sight. Having the power button on the floor-sitting subwoofer is also a bit annoying.

The connected controller has a large metallic Volume dial, but no Power button or track navigation buttons. The Bass level control is hidden on the back of the sub?it's not adjustable from the remote itself. Despite having basically no purpose other than adjusting the volume, the control manages to redeem itself with the inclusion of an extra 3.5mm aux input and a headphone jack. It seems, however, that all of these things could easily have been placed on one of the satellite speakers without making the design hideous, thus eliminating the need for the wired controller altogether and making the entire system a bit more manageable. Edifier, however visually alluring its products may be, is no stranger to odd design choices?the recently reviewed Edifier Spinnaker ?has an annoying cable connection port that makes set up a little frustrating.

The Prisma is armed with Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR, and supports the A2DP codec. Pairing with a Bluetooth sound source is a quick and simple process, and like most Bluetooth systems, the range of the speakers is roughly 30 feet.

Performance
At top volumes, the Prisma 2.1 system has some trouble handling tracks with really deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." The issue, however, is not really about distortion?the signal sounds mostly clean. The problem is the actual vibrations from the deep bass, which make the subwoofer's frame rattle and sound as?if?it were distorting heavily. This seems to only occur at top volumes, however, and only on tracks with serious low end (The Edifier Spinnaker also suffers from this issue.) At reasonable volumes, the Prisma conveys most tracks with a subtle low-end presence. It is neither over-the-top nor anemic, even when the bass level is maxed out on the sub.

This balanced approach benefits most musical genres. On classical tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the speakers let the mid and high frequencies shine, with an emphasis on clarity. The sub's presence is subtle, even at maximum bass level, lending a bit of depth to the brass, large percussion, and lower register strings. The system's overall focus is skewed towards the mid and high range instruments, allowing for nice clarity and texture in the higher strings and wooden percussion hits.

Bill Callahan's vocals on his latest record,?Apocalypse, are delivered with a smooth low-end presence, paired with a crisp edge in the high-mids, while the kick drum has a nice, punchy presence. This has as much to do with the subwoofer's low-end boost as it does the satellites' pleasing mid-range clarity, resulting in a lively bass drum pedal attack followed by a pleasantly rounded-out resonance.

This same mid range clarity creates a ferocious sound when applied to the attack of the thumping beat on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," which also benefits from the sub's presence, but again, in a subtle way. This is more of a flat response system that many 2.1 speaker systems tend to be?and it is certainly not a system for bass fiends.

For $130, the Prisma delivers a clean sound at moderate volumes, with just enough low-end to please. Its Bluetooth streaming is solid, and it's hard to discern much of a difference between the wireless stream and a wired signal from the same sound source, though sometimes the wired signal seems to provide a little more deep bass presence.The annoying design choices and rattling sub may keep the Prisma from greatness, but it's still a solid choice in this price range.

If you're not hooked on a wireless system, the $170 Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, an Editors' Choice, is another visually pleasing 2.1-channel speaker system that offers a bit more thump from the subwoofer and similar clarity in the high frequencies. If Bluetooth is your main priority, but you'd prefer a docking system that can charge your iPod or iPhone, as well, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ?is another Editors' Choice, but it is significantly more expensive. Finally, if all of these suggestions are out of your range and you're looking for a more affordable PC speaker system, the Energy Power EM-2.1 ?is not wireless, but it's about as affordable as speakers get while maintaining any sense of musical quality.

While social media often get blamed for taking too much time in the workplace, Lohrke said studies have shown that sites such as Fa?cebook and Twitter can help companies by allowing workers to interact with cus?tomers and promote busi?ness products and services.

She cited recent study by the McKinsey Global Institute that found 72 percent of companies use social technology in some way, but few are anywhere near achieving the full potential benefits from them.

McKinsey?s report, ?The Social Economy: Unlocking Value and Productivity Through Social Technologies,? said the average interaction worker spends an estimated 28 percent of the work week managing email and nearly 20 percent looking for internal information or tracking down colleagues who can help with specific tasks.

It found that when companies use social media internally, it can reduce by as much as 35 percent the amount of time employees spend searching for company information. ?Social media has value and can help employees be more productive,? Lohrke said. ?One reason American workers have seen productivity improve so much in recent years is advancements in technology.?

Lohrke said she was surprised that TrackVia?s study, which was featured in the Wall Street Journal, got so much media attention because ?it wasn?t an unbiased survey.? TrackVia makes cloud-based application platforms that allow workers to build their own business software to do their work faster ?so people need to know it is engaged in helping workplace productivity.?

Findings

According to survey findings:

More than one in seven employees (15 percent) said they spent one to two hours per week addressing misunderstandings or miscommunications with co-workers. Another 7 percent said they spent three or more hours on this in a typical week.

One in six (17 percent) said they spent one to two hours in a typical week navigating or dealing with office politics. Seven percent said they spent three to five hours, and another 7 percent estimated they spent six or more hours in a typical week dealing with office politics.

Among those who spend time in meetings during a typical week, more than one-third (37 percent) felt at least half of the time in meetings was wasteful of their time. Approximately one in five workers (21 percent) said they spent at least three hours in a typical week attending work meetings.

While some may complain that company policies and procedures can waste their time, 44 percent said they actually helped increase productivity at least slightly.
