BAMAKO, Mali -- An al-Qaida-linked Islamist militant group in control of northern Mali stoned to death a couple accused of engaging in extramarital affairs, the group's spokesman said.

The couple were publicly executed in the remote town of Aguelhok, near the vast West African nation's northern border with Algeria, on Sunday, a spokesman for the Ansar Dine group told Reuters.

"These two people were married and had extra-conjugal relations. Our men on the ground in Aguelhok applied shariah (Islamic law)," said Sanda Ould Bounama, reached by telephone on Monday.

"They both died right away and even asked for this application. We don't have to answer to anyone over the application of shariah," he said.

A local government official told the AFP news agency that he was on the scene. "The Islamists took the unmarried couple to the center of Aguelhok. The couple was placed in two holes and the Islamists stoned them to death," he said.

Police: NFL player kills self at his former school

O.J. Murdock, who signed with the NFL's Tennessee Titans last year, killed himself Monday morning in front of the Tampa, Florida, high school where he was a track and football star, police said.

Murdock, 25, never played a game in the NFL because he had been sidelined with an injury since signing as an undrafted player a year ago.

"In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them," the Titans said in a statement. "He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year's training camp."

Titans head coach Mike Munchak, in his daily briefing with reporters Saturday, was asked why Murdock, a wide receiver, had not yet reported to training camp.

"He had some personal things come up," Munchak said. "He called us, and we're hoping to see him tonight."

Murdock was placed on the "did not report" list over the weekend, but he was still on the roster, team spokesman Robbie Bohren told CNN on Monday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy," the team statement said.

A Tampa police officer found Murdock "in his car in front of Middleton High School with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound," at 8:30 a.m. Monday, a police statement said.

He died two hours later at Tampa General Hospital, police said.

Murdock was ranked among the top football players in Florida and the nation in 2005 when he was a senior at Middleton High School, according to his biography on the Titans website. He was also a star sprinter on his school's track team.

His college career started at the University of South Carolina, but he transferred to Fort Hays State after playing in just four games as a freshman and being redshirted. He then moved to Pearl River Community College, where he was a criminal justice major.

Ex-postmaster accused of conspiring to rob Missouri store

A small town Missouri ex-postmaster has pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired with two other people to rob an Eagle Rock convenience store called Uncle Al's.

The FBI said then-postmaster Michael Stubblefield, 49, allegedly planned to set a tire on fire to divert law enforcement elsewhere and then rob the convenience store and stash the money in a mailbox only he could access, according to KSPR, ABC's affiliate in Springfield, Mo.

One of Stubblefield's alleged co-conspirators was a convenience store employee, who knew how to get into the store after hours, according a statement from the FBI. Once the store operator was fired, Stubblefield allegedly abandoned a "staged robbery" plan for a "store take-over" plan, the FBI said.

He was arrested before the alleged robbery could take place, however, thanks in part to FBI informants.

Stubblefield was indicted in April, according to court documents, and he is no longer the town's postmaster.

Accusers told the FBI they believed Stubblefield was also involved with drug trafficking and jewelry theft, according to the KSPR report.

But neighbors said they have a hard time believing it.

"He was a great guy, I thought, and a lot of other people thought, too," Monte Logan, one of Stubblefield's friends, told KSPR. "I'm really surprised. Lot of us don't even believe it happened. So it's just, I mean, kind of guilty until proven innocent."

Stubblefield pleaded guilty on July 26, and his next court date is in September, according to court documents.

Putting in place a successful direct mail marketing campaign doesn?t have to be scary. Neither should it be seen as a prehistoric marketing method. Multinational companies the world over use direct mail to promote themselves amongst new and existing clients.

If you?ve found yourself penalised by penguin, direct mail marketing is the proverbial silver lining you?ve been looking for. With no risk of over-optimization penalties to contend with, you?re free to market your business in a comprehensive and far reaching way. Here are five tips on implementing a successful direct mail marketing campaign:

1. Keep it Personal

The beauty of direct mail ? as opposed to social media marketing ? is that you can tailor and personalise your messages. Not only can you send mail tailored to past purchases, gender, and age; but you can address each recipient by name.

In the age of the spam email and letter, we?re much more likely to open mail where we are named. This not only looks more ?genuine?, it also looks more professional. In the same way you would with email marketing, you can use software to make this easier.

2. Appeal to Emotions

Consumers are driven, more often than not, by their wants rather than their needs. There have been many occasions when our emotions have swayed our purchases. When you implement your direct mail campaigns, you should appeal to your consumers? emotions.

You?ll know what is most important to them, what their concerns are, and what they want and need from you. Tailor your campaigns to fit these, and appeal to your audience?s emotions. This is much more likely to result in a sale, than a straightforward ?Buy it Now?.

3. Branding

As well as personalising your post, ensuring it follows your corporate branding will help showcase your professionalism. You are recognisable to your clients by your company colour scheme, typography, logo, and strapline. Make sure to include all of these on any printed business literature to increase your open rate.

You should have already identified a ?voice? for your brand (i.e. what you want to say, and how you say it). Make sure that you keep this consistent across direct mail too. The best way to do this is to ensure the same person write the copy for all your marketing materials where possible.

4. Copy is Key

Speaking of the copy, content is still King in print. Sure, a well designed poster or eye-caching postcard will get your customers? attention. But it?s the copy that keeps them engaged. Bear in mind what makes your audience tick, what you want to say, and what your desired action is. You then need to craft this into killer copy.

Nail your headline, focus on the body copy, and craft an irresistible call-to-action. Appeal to the emotions of your reader, and tell them exactly why you?re the company they?ve been looking for. Writing winning sales copy doesn?t have to be hard, but it?s not something you should rush.

5. Make it Track-able

Many marketers shy away from direct mail marketing because they?re not sure how to track the results. With email marketing for instance, you can see how many people have opened your emails and how many have clicked on the links. You don?t have the luxury with direct mail marketing.

However, what you can do is create unique URL. Include this on your site, and track how many people visit via this address. If you don?t have great success, alter your campaign until you get it right. Direct mail is all about trial and error. And once you get it right, you?ll never look back.

By following these steps, and using some common sense, implementing a successful direct mail marketing campaign is easier than you may think. You?re able to quickly and efficiently reach out to your clients ? past and present ? and remind them exactly why you?re the company they should return to.

Mexico to vaccinate 10 million birds in flu outbreak

Mexico will start vaccinating some 10 million poultry Thursday against the highly contagious bird flu strain that has already led to the deaths of five million birds which either fell ill or were slaughtered.

"Starting tomorrow, we are going to vaccinate hens and chicks across the country to put an end to this bird flu epidemic," Mexican President Felipe Calderon said.

The president indicated that the ultimate goal is to have a batch of 80 million vaccinations, so that "in the coming weeks, (Mexico can) end this economic impact on poultry producers."

The virus responsible for the outbreak, H7N3, has occasionally affected humans in various parts of the world, according to the United Nations, but has not shown itself to be easily transmittable between humans.

The prices of both eggs and chickens have soared in the wake of the outbreak, leading inflation to rise as well. According to Mexico's national statistics agency, the first half of July saw an inflation rate of 4.45 percent, the highest level in 18 months.

The agriculture ministry has said poultry farming "contributes up to 40 percent of the total volume" of the country's livestock production, and the "economic loss" from this epidemic "is and will be irreparable."

The outbreak was first detected June 20 in the western state of Jalisco. A national animal health emergency was declared at the beginning of July.

Health officials keep a close watch on such outbreaks since so-called swine flu broke out in Mexico in 2009. The H1N1 virus spread into a global pandemic that claimed the lives of 17,000 people.

Baltimore, Md.'s population Baltimore's population has decreased by one-third since its peak in 1950.

Baltimore is trying to stem a population decline by putting out the welcome mat for immigrants.

Maryland?s "Charm City" is among a host of blue-collar U.S. municipalities that have established immigrant-friendly policies to try to reverse decades of population loss and jump-start job creation and economic growth, The Washington Post reports.?

The effort to attract foreigners is the opposite of actions by states like Arizona and Alabama, which have imposed strict anti-illegal immigration laws that have contributed to an exodus of immigrants.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has told Latinos that they are critical to meeting her goal of reversing the city?s population decline. The city?s population peaked at 950,000 in 1950 and has been declining for decades. The most recent census estimates pegged its population at 650,000, the Post reported.

In March, Rawlings-Blake signed an order prohibiting police and social agencies from asking anyone about immigration status. ?The order also says no city funds, resources, or personnel shall? be used to investigate or arrest people solely for a civil violation of federal immigration law. And it asks U.S. immigration agents to tell people they arrest that they are from the federal government, not the city.

The Post notes that several other cities, most of them manufacturing giants that have fallen on hard times, are pushing immigration-friendly policies to stem an outflow of residents:

The Global Detroit effort includes programs that help immigrants start small businesses, get driver?s licenses and learn English. As part of the Welcome Dayton Plan adopted last year, the Ohio city sponsors a soccer tournament for immigrant teams. Not to be outdone, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) says he wants his home town to be known as the most ?immigrant-friendly city in the country.?

?Immigrants have a lot to contribute to job creation and economic growth,? Steve Tobocman, a former Michigan House majority leader who heads Global Detroit, told the Post.

Tobocman, whose?grandfather emigrated from eastern Poland to southwest Detroit in the early 1900s to pursue the American Dream, wrote last year:

"No one strategy will, by itself, revitalize the Detroit regional economy. However, nothing is more powerful for remaking Detroit as a center of innovation, entrepreneurship and population growth, than embracing and increasing immigrant populations and the entrepreneurial culture and global connections that they bring and deliver."

Not everyone is on?board?with the welcome-immigrants approach.

Maryland State Delegate Patrick L. McDonough, R-Baltimore County, said he is consulting with the conservative think-tank Judicial Watch about whether Rawlings-Blake is ?aiding and abetting? people who are in the country illegally.

McDonough told the Post:

?For the mayor to want to increase the population of Baltimore City in principle is an admirable thing,? McDonough said. ?But by going after people who don?t have a lawful presence, and all of the accompanying cultural and criminal issues associated with that policy, you are counterproductive. You?re going to discourage people who live in the city from continuing to be there.?

How a Dentist Can Create an Effective Internship Program

Some people see interns as college students who are only good for getting coffee and completing a host of other mundane and insignificant tasks. This is especially true when it comes to working for big corporations, doctors or lawyers. This isn?t to say that this perception is necessarily true. However, this is the way these students are portrayed on movies, television shows and even some novels. Because this is the way they are portrayed, some business owners tend to believe that they are only good for these types of tasks. The good news is that this doesn?t have to be the case. If you are a dentist, for example, there are several things you can do to create an effective internship program that can help your business and make an impact on your interns.

For instance, you could allow your interns to assist you while you work on a patient. Of course, they shouldn?t be doing anything that requires them to actually perform dental work. However, they could hand you certain items or even prepare each room before you go in. These things may not seem very important, but at least it allows the student to be around you while you perform your work. So, they will get to witness firsthand, the daily duties of a dentist.

Another thing you could allow your interns to do is set appointments. Although you most likely have a receptionist, this idea could still work. It would free up your staff member?s time. This will allow them to focus on other tasks. If there aren?t many other tasks that need to be handled at that time, it will at least give them a much needed break.

Not only does allowing interns to set appointments help the receptionist, but it will benefit them as well. This will allow them to see all of the things that go into running this type of establishment. It?s about more than just working on people?s teeth. However, there are a lot of behind the scenes activities that must also be taken care of.

Lastly, interns can also work directly with patients and visitors by holding short workshops during business hours. You could allow them to set up a small table in a corner of the office. The table could include pamphlets and other information about the importance of dental health. The intern would hand out the information to visitors and talk with them about different ways they could improve their dental lifestyle. This would allow the students to get used to communicating with others, which is an important aspect of being a dentist.

Contrary to what some may believe interns aren?t useless nor are they to be used as servants. However, they are able to give help while getting help at the same time.

When someone tells you they work in insurance at a party, it?s one of those jobs that naturally produces a less-than-impressed reaction, often accompanied by a?stiffed?groan and a quick subject change. ?It?s on par with accountants, traffic wardens and recruitment consultants, to name a few. But working in the insurance industry can actually be a lot of fun, especially when you get to experience the barrage of ridiculous claims people try to get away with every day.

Take a look at this countdown of the ten most ridiculous, outrageous and downright strange travel insurance claims:

10.?This is a cautionary tale for all parents: children, expensive cameras, and sand DO NOT MIX. One has to question the actions of the parents that, when on a beach in Cornwall with their children, allowed them to play with a digital video camera worth over ?600 which they proceeded to bury in the sand. We all know children can get up to all sorts of strange things, and it?s impossible to keep an eye on them at all times, but at least try to the expensive equipment out of their reach. The children did such a good job of burying the camera that nobody could find it again and all they could do was file an insurance claim for the lost gadget. Amazingly, the insurance company paid out!

9.?Holidays and animals rarely mix well. One family learned this the hard way when on holiday in South Africa, enjoying some spectacular views of wildlife while on safari. Things took a turn for the worse when some overly-friendly monkeys decided to take a closer look at what was on the roof rack of their vehicle.? Clothes were stolen, eaten, ripped and urinated on by the excited primates. Lesson learned: Don?t leave your suitcases on the roof of your jeep during a safari;?insurance companies will not reimburse you!

8. This next one is a fascinating example of how comprehensive some world travel insurance policies can be. A young man, while on holiday in Athens, ended up getting distracted and walking into the wall of a bus shelter, promptly breaking his nose in the process. His reason for being distracted? Several bikini-clad young women across the street!?As travel insurance claims go, it?s certainly an original one. Lucky for him, his claim was accepted and he could afford to get his bashed-up nose put back together, though I?m not sure his ego will ever be repaired.

7. A family took a holiday to Scotland and were shocked and?appalled?when it ended up raining for an entire week! Scotland is so well known for its long, sunny days and dry climate, that you you can be sure this freak weather ruined this family?s holiday.?They were so distressed by the constant drizzle that they filed a formal complaint to their insurance company. Sadly, due to rain falling under the umbrella of a ?natural force? and therefore out of anyone?s control, the insurance company didn?t pay out.?No one wants to plan for bad weather on their holiday, but just in case, I would suggest taking a raincoat if you intend to head to Scotland.

6. Cruise ship, wind, and false teeth are the only words you need for this next one. But to elaborate, there is an infamous story of a poor old man, albeit, a slightly careless poor old man who lost his dentures to the sea when allegedly vomiting over the side of a cruise ship during a bout of seasickness. The man was fully reimbursed by his travel insurance company on the grounds of ?lost property?, but imagine how annoyed you would be to endure the rest of a cruise with only milkshakes and soup as nourishment. Another?man filed a claim for a toupee lost over the edge of a cruise ship, but he?wasn?t?reimbursed.

5. This story is always popular online when talking about the importance of carefully booking your travel arrangements and checking your tickets when they arrive. A man allegedly tried to claim on his world travel insurance policy for being denied boarding on a flight. Why was he denied? When trying to get on a plane in Manchester, UK, he was told he?d actually booked a flight from Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. The claim was swiftly rejected, since it?s not your insurance company?s responsibility to stop you being an idiot. Let this one be a lesson to us all.

4. When you book a skiing holiday, you expect adventure, beautiful scenery and, what else? oh yes, snow! When you arrive?at a ski lodge, the last thing you want is to see rolling green hills. Unfortunately, that?s what happened last year to a British woman who had booked a week on the slopes. An unusually warm winter put a damper on her dream of an Alpine getaway and she promptly lodged a claim with her insurance company for the lack of snow ruining her expensive vacation. Sure, the ski resorts provide plenty of good food, drink and views of the mountains to pass the time, but if they can?t provide snow, it is a bit of a letdown. Shockingly, the insurance company took pity on her and refunded the entire trip! So I guess insurance companies aren?t that callous after all!

3. A rather more dangerous story comes from Wales, where a family?s camping holiday was rudely interrupted when a parachutist missed his targeted landing zone and instead landed right on top of their tent, destroying all their camping equipment. It does sound a little comical, and certainly a little strange. Unfortunately, the family were forced to leave their holiday and replace all the damaged equipment and tent themselves, since they didn?t have adequate travel insurance to cover them in the event of accidental damage. So remember to get comprehensive travel insurance! You never know when the sky will come crashing down on you.

2. For a little comic relief, let us remember the insurance claim story that recently went viral. A woman on vacation in Sri Lanka was happily minding her own business, leafing through a book in the shade of a tree by the beach. Bliss, you might think. Unfortunately for her, not so. A coconut fell on her head and she needed hospital treatment for the injury, which wasn?t cheap. There were CT scans, blood tests, monitoring, and a pretty heft bill. Thankfully, her insurance company did provide the funds to pay the hospital fees and she was only left a little dizzy, but not out of pocket.

1. Finally we come to the tale of a man on holiday in Gibraltar who was left a little red in the face after a monkey he was trying to photograph close up suddenly reached out, grabbed his expensive digital camera and made a run for it!?We don?t know if the man ever got his money back for the expensive camera or if it was ever found, but we do know that no monkeys were prosecuted.
