Martha Raddatz to Moderate VP Debate

ABC's Martha Raddatz, an expert in foreign affairs and national security reporting, will moderate the vice presidential debate heading into the November 6 election.

"I am thrilled to let you know that the Commission on Presidential Debates has asked ABC's Martha Raddatz to moderate one of four nationally televised debates this fall. Martha will moderate the Vice Presidential Debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan on October 11 in Danville, Kentucky," ABC News President Ben Sherwood said in a memo to employees.

"The Commission's four debates will air on all networks and cable news stations, public television and radio, commercial radio, and will be live-streamed online. Since 1988, the Commission has sponsored the only sanctioned debates; they are each watched by many millions of Americans; and they usually deliver some of the most memorable moments of the campaign.

"Martha was chosen by the Commission's co-chairs Michael McCurry and Frank Fahrenkopf.

"Her selection is a great tribute to her toughness, fairness, reporting skills, political knowledge, and many talents as a fearless interviewer and journalist.

"Please join me in congratulating Martha."

CNN's Candy Crowley will moderate one of the three October debates between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. the Commission said today. The announcement comes amid calls for a female moderator for the presidential debate, a movement spearheaded by a trio of New Jersey high school students.
