USS Enterprise retirement will not include Shatner

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? William Shatner is not attending the USS Enterprise's retirement, after all.

A publicist for the actor tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/TvNp1K) the former commander of the fictional starship Enterprise on TV's "Star Trek" is abandoning plans to attend the ceremony Saturday at Norfolk Naval Station. He announced earlier he would be attending.

The publicist tells the newspaper Shatner had to rework his schedule.

The Enterprise returned to Norfolk from its final deployment earlier this month. Saturday's inactivation will be its last public ceremony.

Supportive Facts That Will Lead To Self Improvement | Rob Moore ...

It can often be difficult to know where to start when you try to do something new, and self improvement is no different. The trick towards effective self improvement is to discover the methods that work for you. All individuals are unique, and different things work for different people. That said, keep an eye out for new advice that may help you and use these tips to apply to your own self improvement.

If you desire to be successful in life, you will need a respectable coach who knows what he or she is doing. Every champion has a great coach; the advice of a knowledgeable mentor is priceless. Every person should help others find the way. If this wasn?t expected, how would each generation be able to achieve their very best? All champions have a wonderful coach.

Do you drink too often? Do you do other harmful things like smoke cigarettes? Our bodies are important to maintain, and should be treated with care. Kicking your worst habits is a large part of becoming a happier and more healthy individual. Take a hard look at your daily life and find things that could benefit from a positive restructuring.

Recognizing your limits when performing physical tasks can actually help you meet your goals. Do your best, but do not overwork yourself to the point of physical or mental exhaustion. Taking care to prevent harming your body is more important than reaching your goal. This will end up being counter-productive in your personal development.

Silence your worries. When you worry, you are imagining a horrible situation for yourself that has not yet come to pass, and probably never will. Instead of worrying endlessly about what might happen, start preparing for those scenarios. That way, you will feel prepared, and you will also be able to go on with your life.

Stress can impede your ability to be happy. While experiencing stress, our entire body is affected in both physical and mental ways. Eliminating stress is essential for thinking clearly and achieving goals. Schedule a time every day where you can relax, be alone, and empty your thoughts. Taking the time to renew your center will help you to find peace within yourself.

If you feel you are not making progress, try to see specifically what is keeping you from it. For a lot of people, this is very hard to do. However, if you can figure out what your weakness is, it?s the first step needed to change it. By eliminating problems, you can find your future path easier.

Most employers don?t care about your school or college, they care about the degree you earned and if you can complete the work. However, there are some instances, such as with financial institutions, that this may not be the case. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Stress is not good for you. Because of this fact, you shouldn?t worry too much about little things.

Constantly seek different experiences. Discovering new challenges is a great way to open yourself up to new possibilities. You are sure to learn new things while also developing new skills. You can set the bar for something that no one had ever accomplished. Try to do your own thing, instead of doing what has already been done.

Each person has strengths and weaknesses; therefore, put into practice the techniques which speaks to you. You have to apply these tips if you want to get anything done. You may want to share this article with some of your friends to help them personally develop too.

Stronger every day: Brian Keefer of 'Extreme Makeover' is gaining ...

"It?s a personal choice to be in a good mood or a bad mood, and I choose to be in a good mood." - Brian Keefer

It?s been more than four years since Brian Keefer attempted a triple flip into a foam-filled pit at a Fairview Township gym and plunged head-first into the hard foundation underneath.

In that instant, he became a quadriplegic.

He thinks back to that day constantly, and to the life he led before. A life of athletics, constant motion, carefree days at the beach and few worries.

Thinking back is not depressing, though, he said. It?s motivating.

It?s what keeps him working out daily, pushing himself to strengthen his muscles and retrain the nerves damaged in his accident.

?I want to get back to how life was before,? he said this week after emerging from the HydroWorx therapy pool where exercise specialist Kelsey Harbold had been putting him through his paces. ?I try to be positive. It?s a personal choice to be in a good mood or a bad mood, and I choose to be in a good mood.?

A lot has happened to Keefer, 25, since that day in June 2008.

He went back to school, accompanied by his father, Steve, as his caregiver. He graduated from Lock Haven University in May with a degree in recreation management, an A- grade point average and a standing ovation when he went up on stage.

And most notably, he starred on national TV on the reality show ?Extreme Makeover Home Edition.? That was after 4,000 volunteers rebuilt his family home in Newberry Twp. in one week in June 2011 to help him become as independent as possible.

The house has high-tech innovations such as a voice-activated iPad that lets him turn on the television, dim the lights and perform other tasks without the help of his family.

The highlight of the house is the therapy room. It contains an electrical stimulation bicycle, an adapted treadmill and other items that help him continue what is called ?activity-based restorative therapies.?

Topping all the equipment for helping him improve is the pool installed by Middletown-based HydroWorx. Since Brian graduated in May, he has been working with Harbold in the pool three times a week, and the improvements seem remarkable.

When he started a few months ago, he could sit independently for only a few seconds on a platform in the pool before slumping over. This week, he sat for more than half an hour, even when jets of water pushed hard against his chest and the muscles in his shoulders bulged.

He could move his floating arms back and forth, touching them together in front. That is something he could not do even a few weeks ago.

Working in the pool takes away the weight of gravity, allowing him to move more freely, his dad said.

?The water multiplies the movement he has,? he said. ?It is teaching the nervous system to find different pathways to the lower body.?

Right after the accident, Brian was not able to lift his head. Recently he was able to sit, unsupported.

That was an incredible feeling, Brian said.

?It?s baby steps, but huge, huge progress,? Steve said.

Lately, it seems the baby steps are coming quicker, he said.

?Each hour of each day it gets better,? he said.

Brian operates his wheelchair with movements of his head. His next wheelchair should have a joystick that he can move with his hands as his movement and strength improve, said his mother, Dawn. He can now wave. Being able to move his arms and hands will help him feed himself and add another step to his independence.

Brian learned the physical therapy moves through the Kennedy Krieger Institute?s International Center for Spinal Cord Injury in Baltimore, where he goes every six months to be tested for nerve reactions and muscle strength and to receive intensive therapy. He is to visit again in December, if the insurance company agrees to pay, Dawn said.

Therapists from the center spent six weeks with the ?Extreme Makeover? crew members advising them on the type of equipment likely to help Brian.

The center was founded in 2005 by John McDonald, the doctor who helped the late actor Christopher Reeve regain some movement many years after his injury in a horse-riding accident.

It embraces a whole new way of treating spinal cord injuries.

The institute?s website says: ?For many years, experts held that most improvements from spinal cord injuries occurred in the first six months of recovery, and that improvement was impossible after two years. ... The experts were wrong.?

Daniel Becker, director of the pediatric spinal cord injury unit at Kennedy Krieger, said new patients often tell him their previous doctors have told them there is nohope after six months or a year.

?We learned more than 10 years ago that is absolutely not true,? he said.

Recovery from an injury never stops as long as patients continue with aggressive rehabilitation, he said. Brian is a perfect example.

When Becker started treating him in November 2008, Brian?s body was flaccid, he said. He called the changes in his function remarkable.

?We get the question all the time about how much better a patient can expect to get,? Becker said. ?Nobody can tell you what you won?t be able to do in the future.?

Brian ?is far from his full potential,? he said.

Activity-based restorative therapies encourage neural cells to regenerate and help patients avoid the complications of paralysis such as osteoporosis, skin breakdown, infection and cardiovascular decline, the institute?s website says.

?By activating the central nervous system, we can repair damaged nerves,? Becker said.

Years ago, Brian probably would have died shortly after his accident, said. Now, ?He is actually in very good health,? she said.

Becker said Brian has ?the perfect storm for recovery chances? because of his high degree of motivation, positive attitude, extremely dedicated family, the help of ?Extreme Makeover?s? therapy room and community support.

While the television crews are long gone, many of the contractors who helped build the house return whenever anything needs to be fixed, Dawn said. Local community groups still run fund-raisers to help buy equipment for Brian.

Neighborhood grocery stores are still filled with people wearing the green wrist bands a friend of Brian?s sold for a fundraiser after his accident.

The support of family, friends, school and the community also has been vital in Brian?s recovery, the Keefers said.

In January, Brian and his family will travel to Oklahoma, where he has a five-month internship as an assistant coach for the Paralympic volleyball team. After that, he?s not sure what he will do.

But he absolutely believes he will walk again one day.

4 Skills It Takes To Make Your Marriage Thrive | World of Psychology

Making Your Marriage Thrive: 4 Tips That May HelpThis guest article from YourTango was written by?Teresa Maples.

Many women and men dismiss bits of information about their partner that turn out to be warning signs for future trouble. These subtle feelings are actually your gut telling you to pay attention to something.

During the early phase of marriage, most people want to see the good in their spouse. Overall, I think this is a good strategy. However, it is also important and healthy to be able to trust your gut when you feel there is a problem in your relationship and address it with your spouse.

Trusting your gut involves some basic skills, so let?s look at four tips that may help improve the chances of your marriage thriving.

1. Awareness of your body sensations ? What is your gut telling you?

This involves paying attention to your heartbeat rate, pain in your heart, tightness in your chest, weight on your shoulders, intestinal distress and other sensations as indicators to pay attention to your feelings.

For example, early in my marriage, I overlooked my gut feelings. I did not have words for them. My husband would talk a lot, tell stories and generally be entertaining. This is a great quality about him; anyone would say he is a great story teller. At the time, I saw his story telling as a positive since I was relieved from my responsibility to communicate, due to my shyness and insecurity. I actually pushed my body sensations aside and did not pay attention to them.

It worked for me at the time. However over time, my body sensations began to emerge as tightness in my throat, pressure in my chest and pain in my heart. I knew then there was something wrong. I then had to find words for the bodily sensations I felt. I developed a deep resentment towards him and didn?t know why.

2. Vocabulary to identify subtle feelings.

Once you have identified your bodily sensation, you can begin to identify the feeling associated with it. Most people will identify with feelings of sad, mad or glad. But there are deeper feelings which fuel these basic catagories of feelings. Some of these deeper feelings can be fear of rejection, fear of loneliness or fear of abandonment.

I had to learn to accept my sad and mad feelings. Then after digging deeper, I found that I felt cast aside, rejected and abandoned by my husband when he told his stories. He would be the center of attention and I would be in a pity party with myself.

3. Courage to communicate your feelings to your partner.

Talking about deep feelings is a courageous act. When we risk exposing ourselves in a deep way we risk being hurt by the other person. Ultimately we have to decide if it is worth the risk of being exposed and connected fully and authentically with another person. Hiding parts of who we are out of fear leaves us disconnected and not really known.

Once I identified my deep feelings, I had to take responsibility for myself and be more assertive. I needed to communicate and share who I was with my husband and with other people. I knew that if I wanted to be known by him I had to be willing to work through any reaction he might display. I had to have courage to risk his disapproval or rejection if he reacted to my deep feelings. Actually, by the time I did share my feelings with him, I was determined to be known regardless the cost.

4. Problem solving skills to address the situation with your partner for a win-win outcome.

Sometimes when you change a behavior in a relationship it is confusing to your partner. Through couples counseling you can learn new ways of relating to each other that work better for both of you. Helping your partner to thrive will improve your satisfaction in the relationship.

My husband and I learned to resolve differences with help. I learned to take care of my social needs and he learned to allow space for others to tell their stories too. My husband?s determination to find a win-win solution helped us grow closer together.

Always remember relationships are messy ? there is no way around that fact. Negotiating the intimate details of our lives is risky. Every person has gut feelings. Working through these feelings is what makes for a healthy marriage or couple-ship.

Immigration Clearinghouse - HOW MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS ...

by MARY CHASTAIN

24 Nov 2012

As the Mexican drug cartels obtain more control in Mexico, they are able to seep across the border and grab hold of the drug market in the United States. Cartels are able to easily transport their product across America, and to some this is proof the war on drugs is failing.

?We pretend that the cartels don?t have an infrastructure in the U.S.,? Fulton Armstrong, and ex-CIA officer, told The Washington Post. ?But you don?t do a $20 billion a year business . . . with ad-hoc, part-time volunteers. You use an established infrastructure to support the markets. How come we?re not attacking that infrastructure??

The Sinaloa cartel, headed by Joaquin ?El Chapo? Guzman, one of the most wanted men in the world, dominates the drug market. They are also the same cartel that received over 2,000 guns from the ATF in Operation Fast & Furious. The drugs are shipped to Los Angeles where cartels hide the drugs in trucks with other common goods and ship them to their destinations via major highways. Popular hubs include Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, but the DEA estimates there are 1,286 cities on the distribution grid.

Pseudoephedrine laws have lead to a huge drop in American made methamphetamine, but it?s also given rise to Mexican-made meth. This is a top drug in major cities like Oklahoma City. Two times this summer the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) made drug busts related to Mexican meth. Chicago DEA Agent Jack Riley said the Sinaloa cartel?s meth is more pure and ?that gives users a faster and longer-lasting high.?

Agencies manage to put dope on the table, but it hardly puts a dent in the infrastructure. The drug cartels send in new lieutenants to replace old ones. High up officials are still just pegs on the totem pole and can be easily replaced. Unless law enforcement gets to the heart of the infrastructure, the king (the supplier) will remain the king, and drugs will flow freely.

Notre Dame reigns atop college football again

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The postgame roars from Notre Dame's locker room echoed right through the Coliseum's thick cement walls and metal beams Saturday night, moving around the 89-year-old arena like a long-absent force of nature.

After decades away, the Fighting Irish are back on top of college football ? unmatched in the rankings, unblemished in the standings, and unequivocally ready for a chance to end a 24-year national championship drought.

Manti Te'o, the star Irish linebacker from Hawaii who led this improbable revival season, took a moment to listen to those echoes.

"This is where you want to be when you go to Notre Dame," he said.

The Irish are No. 1 again ? a Golden Dome atop their sport.

Notre Dame (12-0) beat Southern California 22-13 to complete its first unbeaten regular season since 1988. That's also the last championship year for the school that produced a legion of the sport's most memorable figures: Knute Rockne, the Four Horsemen, Paul Hornung, Joe Montana ? heck, even Rudy Ruettiger.

A no-nonsense win over Notre Dame's intersectional rivals in Los Angeles capped a year of historic dominance for a defense led by Te'o, its inspirational Heisman contender. That defense allowed just nine touchdowns all season long, capped by four downs of unyielding play while backed up to its goal line by the Trojans in the final minutes.

"You just put the ball down in front of us, and if there's time on the clock, we're never going to give up," defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore said.

These Irish never flinched, either in dire late-game circumstances or under the weight of history that has crushed decades of previous Notre Dame teams. After beginning the year unranked and projected for maybe eight victories by optimistic pundits, the Irish produced a marvelous season of old-fashioned, hard-nosed football amid the wacky spread offenses and garish neon uniforms that seem to dominate the sport these days.

After winning half of their games by nine points or fewer, including two hair-raising escapes in overtime victories, it's clear these Irish have something else going for them as well.

"Not saying it was lucky, but luck doesn't hurt," said Terry Brennan, who played at Notre Dame in the late 1940s and coached the team from 1954-58. "The point is, they got the break and they took advantage of it. That's the key."

The Irish have six weeks to prepare for the BCS title game on Jan. 7, but coach Brian Kelly's restoration of the Notre Dame mystique could linger much longer.

The Golden Dome atop Notre Dame's administration building has regained its luster at a school where coaches Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis all failed to restore the program to its most recent glory under Lou Holtz in the late 1980s. All told, Notre Dame lost at least three games every season between 1993 and this fall ? not bad, but not good enough to contend for national titles.

Just three years after taking over a 6-6 team with ancient expectations annually dwarfed by the modern realities of competing at a Catholic school in frigid northern Indiana with tough academic standards, Kelly has put the Irish back on top.

And though he's still one win shy of ultimate success, Kelly did it in his third year ? the same season in which Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Holtz all won national titles during their tenures at Notre Dame.

"It's easy to say, 'Well, yeah, I'm surprised,'" Kelly said. "But when you go in that locker room and are around the guys I'm around, you're not surprised. The commitment they've made ? they've done everything I've asked them to do. It doesn't surprise me anymore."

Thousands of Irish fans turned up at the Coliseum for the regular-season finale, demonstrating the wide reach of Notre Dame's appeal. The Irish have embraced their status as an international program in recent years, playing everywhere from Yankee Stadium to Dublin, Ireland, while Kelly put the ingredients in place for this season's success.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who replaced Weis with Kelly three years ago next month, acknowledges he expected the Irish to need maybe one more year to contend at an elite level.

Although Notre Dame's defense was clearly tough, nobody could have expected such success from an offense now led by the likes of quarterback Everett Golson, who redshirted last year, and tailback Theo Riddick, who was a slot receiver last season.

The Irish were nobody's favorite, but they've ended up on top. The 84-year-old Brennan, who was just 25 when he took over the Irish program in 1954, knows all about the importance of seizing the moment.

"Grab it when you can," he said. "Next year you might have injuries, and the ball bounces the other way."

The Irish returned home Sunday knowing they've still got a bit of work to do ? and if their season to date is any indication, they're still hungry.

Notre Dame is likely to be an underdog to an opponent from the Southeastern Conference in the BCS title game. The Irish will rely on the experience of their unbeaten season, the history of past champions wearing their uniforms, and the support of untold millions who love what the team once represented ? and what it means again.

Te'o, who turns 22 in January, hadn't been born the last time Notre Dame won a national title. He still knows the date of the last Irish national championship by heart, thanks to the sign at the end of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium where he steps on that hallowed field each game day.

"I'm just hoping that we can add our year to it," Te'o said. "But it's going to take a lot of work."

Architecture of rod sensory cilium disrupted by mutation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Using a new technique called cryo-electron tomography, two research teams at Baylor College of Medicine have created a three-dimensional map that gives a better understanding of how the architecture of the rod sensory cilium (part of one type of photoreceptor in the eye) is changed by genetic mutation and how that affects its ability to transport proteins as part of the light-sensing process.

Almost all mammalian cells have cilia. Some are motile and some are not. They play a central role in cellular operations, and when they are defective because of genetic mutations, people can go blind, have cognitive defects, develop kidney disease, grow too many fingers or toes or become obese. Such mutations cause cilia defects known in the aggregate as ciliopathies.

Three-dimensional look

"The major significance of this report lies in our being able to, for the first time, look in three dimensions at the structural alterations in ciliopathies," said Dr. Theodore G. Wensel, chair of biochemistry and molecular biology at BCM and corresponding author of the report that appears in the journal Cell.

In collaboration with the National Center for Macromolecular Imaging, led by Dr. Wah Chiu, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at BCM, Wensel and his colleagues established such three dimensional images for cilia in three examples of mice known to have cilopathies.

These mice have genetic mutations that lead to defects in the structure of the rod outer segment. The rod outer segment is part of the photoreceptor in the retina called a rod. The rod outer segment contains photosensitive disk membranes that carry rhodopsin, the biological pigment in photoreceptor cells of the retina responsible for the first events that result in the perception of light.

Comparing rod outer segments

Using cryo-electron tomography, the scientists compared the structures of the rod outer segment in the mutant mice to those in normal mice.

"This is one of the few places in the world where you could do this," said Wensel. The center, run by Chiu, has powerful cryo-electron microscopes that make tomography possible. To achieve the three-dimensional reconstruction, Dr. Juan T. Chang in Chiu's center froze the photoreceptors purified by then-graduate student Jared Gilliam in a special way that made it possible to perform electron microscopy. During the microscopy session, the frozen samples were carefully tilted allowing the researchers to take many two-dimensional images that were used in the computer reconstruction of the three-dimensional map.

The light-sensing outer segments of photoreceptors in the retina are connected to the machinery responsible for protein production in the inner segment by a thin cylindrical bundle of microtubules known as the connecting cilium.

"There is a huge flux of material from the inner segment to the outer segment of the photoreceptor," said Wensel. "When there is a defect, then the animal or patient goes blind."

The three-dimensional structure showed that there are vesicles (small sacs) tethered to membrane filaments.

"It looks as though these vesicles that are tethered contain material that will fuse to the plasma membrane and go up the membrane to the outer segment," said Wensel.

Photoreceptor degeneration

In studies of a mouse model of a disease called Bardet Biedl syndrome, developed by the laboratory of Dr. James Lupski, professor of molecular and human genetics at BCM, Wensel and first author Gilliam saw something that was almost shocking--a huge accumulation of these vesicles. The Bardet Biedl genes contain the code for a BBsome that forms a membrane coat that makes transport possible through the connecting cilium to the outer coat.

"We would now surmise that the BBsome coat is required for fusion of the plasma membrane or transport up to the outer segment," said Wensel. "It gives us a whole new model for how this works. We need to do more now to nail it down."

"It suggests that aberrant trafficking of proteins is responsible for photoreceptor degeneration," said Gilliam, who is now a postdoctoral associate at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

'Cult of David Petraeus': Did media perpetuate a myth?

The case of former CIA Director David Petraeus has not only caused head-scratching in the halls of the Pentagon and within the intelligence community. It has also inspired journalists to do a bit of soul-searching within their own ranks. The questions tend to go something like this: Were we too easy on him?

The now-retired four-star general, who ran the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was routinely called the greatest strategic military mind of his generation. While an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, has no direct connection to Mr. Petraeus's military achievements, it does take the glow off the cult of personality that had developed around him. And defense reporters are now acknowledging they played no small part in burnishing that once-shining image.

Are you smarter than a US Marine? Take the recruitment quiz.

Why did the press corps ? usually so hard-bitten and cynical ? come under Petraeus's sway? He was indisputably a genius at cultivating the press.

He promptly answered journalist e-mails and had an impressive command of journalistic lingo ? like off-the-record, background, and deep background ? that remains a bit foggy to the general public, and even many reporters.

?His ability to talk to a reporter for 45 minutes, to flow on-the-record to background or off-the-record and back, and to say meaningful things and not get outside the lane too much ? it was the best I?ve ever seen,? recalls retired Col. Pete Mansoor, Petraeus?s executive officer in Iraq, in a piece by Wired defense reporter Spencer Ackerman.

RECOMMENDED: Did anything illegal happen in the Petraeus scandal? Five questions so far.

Writing for the magazine?s Danger Room blog, Mr. Ackerman wrestled with a blunt and brave notion: ?How I was drawn into the cult of David Petraeus.? Petraeus understood how access could help soften the media's rough edges. The general routinely invited reporters for morning jogs, giving them a sense of being part of the action. ?It?s embarrassing to remember that that felt pretty good,? Ackerman recalls.

Vernon Loeb ? the Washington Post reporter who ghost-wrote Ms. Broadwell?s book, ?The Education of David Petraeus? ? also partook in runs with the general.

?The commander of the war in Afghanistan and I ran side by side, talking about great world events,? Mr. Loeb recalls in a post-scandal piece. ?I could scarcely believe I was getting this kind of access.?

Loeb was also embedded with the 101st Airborne Division when it was under the general?s command in 2003. ?Petraeus granted me unfettered access to his command headquarters,? he writes, adding that he ?found the general ? and what he?d accomplished ? impressive and inspiring.? Some of the criticism, like Ackerman?s, is self-reflective. Other reporters point with some anger to the ?media-military industrial complex,? in which reporters become fellows at defense industry-backed think tanks, sharing office space ?with retired generals whom they?d regularly quote in their stories,? notes Michael Hastings (who wrote the Rolling Stone article that led to Gen. Stanley McChrystal?s resignation as the commander of US forces in Afghanistan), in a blog for Buzzfeed.

The stories produced by this relationship served to build up ?an unrealistic and superhuman myth around the general that, in the end, did not do Petraeus or the public any favors,? Mr. Hastings writes.

They also helped to deflect tough questions. Though Petraeus provided tremendous access, few real revelations tended to come of it. In other words, the stories tended largely to reinforce Petraeus?s point of view. Even when reporters disagreed with Petraeus, they still used his language.

For example, Petraeus would often say progress on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan was ?fragile and reversible.? When reporters quoted him on this line, however, they were still using the word ?progress.? Petraeus?s downfall reveals ?that some of us who egotistically thought our coverage of Petraeus and counterinsurgency was so sophisticated were perpetuating myths without fully realizing it,? Ackerman argues. He recalls an interview he conducted on a morning run with the general as ?he calmly parried my wheezed questions.? It was only afterward that he realized ?I didn?t gain any useful or insightful answers, just a crazy workout story that I strained to transform into a metaphor for the war.?

The result was a quote from Petraeus noting that war, like running, is exhausting but requires perseverance. Ackerman shakes his head at his own reporting. ?Ugh,? he writes. The verdict among defense reporters digesting the Petraeus fallout, in other words, is that access can be intoxicating. It also can be overrated.

Observers: Sierra Leone vote peaceful

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) ? Sierra Leone carried out a largely peaceful and well-conducted vote despite isolated reports of money changing hands and polling stations marred by bees and lack of light, observers said Monday.

Saturday's vote was the third presidential election since the end of the West African country's brutal 11-year civil war that ended in 2002, and experts say it is a key test of how far the nation has come.

While local radio stations have begun airing unofficial results from some polling stations, the National Electoral Commission has yet to announce whether the vote will go to a second round.

Incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma must garner 55 percent of the ballots cast or he will face his main opponent Julius Maada Bio in a second round of voting.

In issuing the European Union observer mission's preliminary results, chief observer Richard Howitt said Monday it is up to the country's election body to make a decision on the when to announce the results. The body legally has up to 10 days following the election to declare its results.

"Clearly the National Electoral Commission will want to take sufficient time and care to ensure the accurate accounting of the vote but they will want to move as quickly as possible with the announcement of the results before any risks of instability or unrest," Howitt said.

Sierra Leone's chief elections officer Christiana Thorpe said that polling "was reported to be peaceful and orderly in almost all polling stations nationwide."

She, however, noted that polling was disrupted by a swarm of honey bees in ward 135 in the Kambia District.

"The polling station was automatically relocated and polling went on peacefully," she said.

The EU mission noted that there were isolated reports of the governing party distributing cash payments. While the mission was assured that the amount of money involved amounted to a local "handshake," Howitt said in one case there was "a significant amount of money involved."

There also was a report of one polling station where voters who presented ID cards were allowed to vote though they ultimately were not on the voter registry, Howitt said. The ballot boxes in question were under quarantine pending an investigation, he added.

The U.S.-based Carter Center also said Monday that Sierra Leone's vote had been "peaceful, orderly and transparent." Some polled opened late and in some cases there were shortages of election materials, the observers noted.

"These shortfalls were generally addressed by midday and they did not undermine the fundamental integrity of the electoral process," said former Zambian President Rupiah Banda who is with the Carter Center delegation.

The observer mission from the West African regional bloc ECOWAS also noted a few isolated incidents, including the absence of back-up lighting which required party agents to improvise with cellphones and flashlights to enable counting in the dark.

Sierra Leone's presidential race has hinged on which candidate can best uplift this West African country trying to shed its past after a brutal 1991-2002 civil war.

A decade after the war's end, Sierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in the world despite its diamonds and other riches. Several recent offshore oil discoveries, though, are raising hopes for economic development.

Most of the country's nearly 6 million people live on less than $1.25 a day, and it remains among the deadliest places in the world for women to give birth. Earlier this year, the capital was hard-hit by a cholera outbreak.

While Sierra Leone already had held two mostly peaceful votes since the war's end, experts said Saturday's vote would be a crucial test of whether those gains were irreversible.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Sierra Leonean voters for the "peaceful and largely orderly elections.

"The high voter turnout and the remarkable calm displayed by the country's citizens as they cast their votes are a clear manifestation of their desire for peace, democracy and development," said a statement released by his spokesperson.

The incumbent president, Koroma, has pointed to his accomplishments during his first term, pleading with voters in his campaign signs: "I Will Do More."

He faced eight opponents including leading opposition figure Julius Maada Bio, a retired brigadier-general who calls himself the "father of democracy" after his brief three-month tenure at the country's helm in 1996.

Space Station Astronauts Headed Back to Earth Tonight

A veteran astronaut crew representing the United States, Russia and Japan is returning back to Earth aboard a Soyuz capsule today (Nov. 18) to wrap up a four-month mission to the International Space Station.

The Soyuz spacecraft undocked from the space station at 5:26 p.m. EST (2126 GMT) as both ships sailed 256 miles (412 kilometers) above northwestern China. The Soyuz is due to land on the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan at 8:53 p.m. EST (0153 Nov. 19 GMT) to return American astronaut Sunita Williams of NASA, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide to Earth after 127 days in space.?

The trio will make a rare night landing when their Soyuz TMA-05M capsule lands in Kazakhstan. At landing time, it is expected to be a cold night with an hour to go before sunrise, NASA officials said. You can watch the Soyuz landing live here via SPACE.com's NASA TV feed.

"Good luck, guys," American astronaut Kevin Ford, who now commands the station's Expedition 34 crew, as the Soyuz departed.

Williams, who commanded the station's Expedition 33 mission, turned control of the outpost over to Ford on Saturday (Nov. 17). The command change marked the start of the station's Expedition 34 mission by Ford and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin, who arrived at the station in late October. [Photos: Space Station's Expedition 33 Mission]

"I think we've left this ship in good shape and I'm honored to hand it over to Kevin," Williams told Ford before presenting gifts to Expedition 34 crew in an emotional exchange. "As you can see, we have a great crew up her, us who are going home very shortly and the ones who are taking over. The ship's in good hands."

Williams, Malenchenko and Hoshide launched into orbit in mid-July, with Williams becoming the second female commander of the space station when she took charge earlier this year. Williams, an avid runner, became ran the first triathlon in space during the mission, which also featured three spacewalks and the first official cargo delivery by a robotic Dragon spacecraft built by the U.S. company SpaceX.

The Soyuz spacecraft ferrying Williams and her crewmates back to Earth is due to fire its rocket engine to leave orbit at 7:58 p.m. EST (0058 Nov. 19 GMT) and land in Kazakhstan just under one hour later. It will be the first night landing of a Soyuz spacecraft since the Expedition 12 mission in 2006, NASA officials said.

A fleet of eight helicopters carrying recovery teams and vehicles will be circling the Soyuz spacecraft's primary and backup landing zones in order to ensure a swift retrieval of the returning astronauts.

As Williams and her crew readapt to life on Earth, the Expedition 34 crew still on the space station will prepare for a busy holiday season in orbit. The astronaut and cosmonauts are expected to celebrate the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday (Nov. 22) and prepare for the arrival of three new crewmembers in mid-December.

A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko will ?launch to the space station on Dec. 19 from the Central Asian spaceport of Baikonur Cosmondrome in Kazakhstan.

The International Space Station is the largest manmade structure in space. It was built by? five different space agencies representing the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, with construction beginning in 1998. The $100 billion space station has been continuously occupied by a series of rotating astronaut crews since 2000.
